Giverny from just above the gardens

Starting behind Giverny town hall, this loop follows the western part of the Astragale trail while already on the GR2 — one of France’s “Grande Randonnée” long-distance trails — passes markers 6 and 5, then stays on the GR2 for the descent towards Sainte-Radegonde church. The return then crosses the village centre before climbing back to the town hall via Rue du Pressoir.

Start behind the town hall and walk up the small road heading north, towards Bois-Jérôme-Saint-Ouen. After a short distance, the trail begins on the left and you join the western section of the Astragale path.

After the first left turn, the path gradually gains height. The view opens onto the hillside and then the tiny vineyard above the village, with Sainte-Radegonde church appearing below the vines.

You are already on the GR2 from the start of the trail. At the higher junction, keep following its red-and-white waymarks and turn left to head back down into Giverny. Once in the village, pass Sainte-Radegonde church and Claude Monet’s grave, continue towards the Musée des impressionnismes, then take Rue du Pressoir back up to the town hall.

Five easy landmarks

  1. Behind the town hall

Walk up the small road heading north, towards Bois-Jérôme-Saint-Ouen, then take the path on the left.

  2. The western Astragale loop

Follow markers 6 then 5 as the scenery quickly shifts from hedges and woodland edges to more open views.

  3. The vineyard

The most open part of the walk, with the small vineyard in front of you and Sainte-Radegonde church below.

  4. Still on the GR2

The red-and-white GR waymarks are already present from the start of the trail. At the junction, keep following the GR2 by turning left for the short descent into the village. Straight on leads higher towards the plateau and belongs to a different walk.

  5. Church, museum and Rue du Pressoir

After the church and Monet’s grave, continue towards the museum and take Rue du Pressoir back up to the town hall.
